Asus Laptop Battery Troubleshooting

#Case 1: Battery Cannot Be Charged/Fully Charged/Provide Power

Check The AC Adapter Or Battery Connection

The messages indicate that your battery will not charge or it fails to provide energy for the PC. In this case, the first thing to do is to check the hardware’s issues.

First, make sure you use a compatible AC adapter for the computer. The original one that shipped with it is the best choice.

Then, check to see if there’s any loose point:

  • Between the power cord and the charger port
  • Between the cable and the power brick
  • And between the cable and the power outlet.

Also, make sure your power outlet is functional and not connected via any surge protector or power strip.

Check to see if there’s any damage to the power cord and the power brick. If there is, you may need to bring it to service.

Next, remove the power cell if it’s removable, check the connection point for any damage or dirt. If it’s dirty, clean it with a Q-tip or dirt-free cloth.

If you have left the PC without use for so long, please let it charge overnight under a lower current.

If the problems still exist after all the above methods, continue the troubleshooting.

EC (Embedded Controller) Reset

The EC is a microcontroller in your PC that deals with many different system tasks. Resetting it might eliminate any errors within its operation.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Remove any outer part of your device, including battery, ODD, CD/DVD, external hard drive, memory cards, printers, USB, cords, and dongles…
  • Turn off the computer. Remove the AC adapter except for models TP420IA and UX425IA.
  • Press and then hold the Power key for 40 seconds straight to reset the EC
  • Reboot the PC and install its parts. Check if the problems persist.

Update The BIOS

Sometimes the issues may be because the BIOS is not updated to the latest version; thus, it makes the machine encounter many compatibility problems.

  • To update your BIOS, download the latest version from the Asus Support site. Remember to download the correct BIOS for your model—download BIOS Installer for Windows under the BIOS Update(Windows) category.
  • After downloading it, navigate to the downloaded files.
  • Extract the files to your designated address. Then, navigate to the address and run the BIOS Update/Installer application.
  • Next, run the setup wizard to install it on your computer. After it’s done, restart to see if the problem is resolved. Remember to plug the AC adapter entirely during the process.

  • To launch the Legacy Mode, first, turn off your computer, then when it’s not on yet, press the F2 key and hold it, then press the power key to launch the BIOS configuration display, then press F9.
  • Select Yes and Enter. Next, press F10, select Yes, and Enter again to confirm saving.

Use MyASUS Utility To Diagnose

Note: If your computer doesn’t feature MyASUS, please download and install it from the Asus Support site.

  • Navigate to the search engine on Windows and type in “MyASUS” to find and launch the utility.
  • Next, follow this path: Customer Support > System Diagnosis > Battery Problems > (Plug in the AC adapter) Checkup.
  • Then, follow the utility guides on any problems solving method according to your situation.

Reinstall The AC Adapter/Battery Drivers With Device Manager

Follow this path to uninstall the drivers:

  • First, launch the Device Manager via the search bar.
  • In the Batteries section, expand with the arrow button on its left, then right-click the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.
  • Choose Uninstall device, then uninstall it.
  • Do the same method to uninstall the Microsoft AC Adapter.

Then restart the PC to reinstall the 2 uninstalled drivers automatically.

Battery Stops Charging At 60% Or 80%

If you find it annoying, you can change ASUS Battery Health Charging settings. In some models, you can access this utility via the MyASUS utility. Or else, you can launch it with the search bar as usual.

The display and interface of the utility will be different based on the model you are using. However, there will always be 3 options you can choose to optimize your use of the power modes.

Battery Stops Charging

  • The Full Capacity Mode should let you charge the battery to 100%. The mode will ensure it has the most runtime at a time.
  • The Balance mode will balance out between the battery’s health and its runtime. It provides a maximum output of 80%.

On the other hand, the Maximum lifespan mode will maximize your battery life cycle by limiting its capacity to only 60%. Only use this if you bring your AC adapter to charge it conveniently because the runtime will also decrease.

#Case 2: Slow Charging

This problem can also be diagnosed and fixed with the above methods. However, if none of those work, you can try predicting the charging time through the software you use.

In other words, some software can cause the charging to slow down because they use a lot of energy. To see if the charging speed is expected, please turn off any software on your computer, run it on Safe Mode, and estimate the time again.

If that isn’t the case, the AC Adapter or the power cell may be defective and need a replacement.

Also, note that the power output affected by some software can also be detrimental to your battery runtime.

#Case 3: Normal Wear And Tear

Due to the chemical components of a Lithium-Ion battery, their performance, i.e., the runtime, will diminish with time. You can check the average battery life to see if it’s poorly performing.

If your battery has been used and abused so much, sometimes it can barely hold for more than a couple of minutes. This situation is normal, and it suggests that you need a replacement for your device.

Conclusion

While using electronic devices, errors and faulty parts are something we all want to avoid. But due to the nature of laptops and batteries in general, they will occur sooner or later.

If so, please don’t panic, but refer to guides like this Asus laptop battery troubleshooting to see if you can fix the problems yourself.
